SOLD SOLD (04/03) **RARE**WW1 Era British Officer's Private Purchase Pritchard Greener 1916 Patent Trench Fighting Bayonet For Webley MK VI. See pages 382 No 792 of The Bayonet Book by Watts & White for similar. The brass furniture is good with minor use related knocks which are visible in the images. The leather scabbard is in good order with all stitching in place. The fish scale grips are good and intact with a few use related marks. The spine has a Broad Arrow and markings *see images*. One side of the ricasso is marked ‘/87 and the other ‘WD’ below Broad Arrow and ‘E over 77’. The blade is in good condition with staining consistent with its age. over 8890 which is an unknown regimental marking. Blade length 18.3”, overall length 23.6” (muzzle 18mm). The 2nd pattern Enfield Martini bayonets were modified and subsequently became the pattern 1887 Mark I sword bayonet. A 2nd pattern Enfield Martini rifle was also produced and the records for the years 1887 & 1888 indicate that 23,569 second pattern bayonets were manufactured. The locking mechanism utilises a leaf spring. The 1st pattern Enfield Martini bayonet was designed to fit beneath the barrel, the crossguard being provided with a hole for the clearing rod. All leather & stitching are clean & intact. The bayonet’s leather scabbard has steel throat mount with locket and chape. The slab wood grips are undamaged and secured by the correct screw bolts. The pommel is Regiment or Unit marked ‘SNR’ (unknown). The pommel's release button functions as it should. The pommel and cross guard with correct hook quillon are in excellent undamaged condition. This Enfield made Mark 1 bayonet made in 1911 before the great war started has a nice, clean, blade, which is stamped on the ricasso 'King’s Crown, 1907 (pattern) ‘1 ‘11 (January 1911 date) together with 'EFD' (Enfield) manufacturer mark, WD arrow and inspection marks. The pattern 1907, MK 1, Bayonet with hooked Quillon was approved on 30th January 1908 (see page 186 of British & Commonwealth Bayonets By Skennerton). It is complete with steel scabbard and leather frog with belt strap loop & buckle. The ‘T’ form blade measures 8 ½” length (just under 13” overall). It has the correct sprung steel locking catch incorporated into the cross guard. It has the correct brass hilt crisply stamped with the 1916 patent detail 'Patent No.17143/16'. This is an excellent Pritchard Greener bayonet, as with most surviving examples, made post WW1 using original WW1 parts. 455 calibre Webley MK VI Revolver these weapons utilised the front portion of the "T" cross section French Gras Model 1874 Bayonets which were very available during WW1.
